Former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has been left furious over Caroline Wozniacki’s comments about her alleged doping in a war of words between the two tennis stars.

It was confirmed that Halep was free to return to tennis earlier this month as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced her four-year ban after an appeal.

Halep, who lifted the Wimbledon trophy in 2019 as well as the French Open six years ago, winning a total of 24 singles titles, has always denied any wrongdoing.

The Romanian star made her return at the Miami Open on Tuesday, taking the first set off Paula Badosa before her Spanish opponent battled back to win.

Halep, who previously spent 64 weeks as world No.1, was delighted to make her comeback but not all of her fellow WTA stars shared the same level of enthusiasm.

Wozniacki has upset Halep with her remarks in Florida as the Danish star said: ‘If someone has tested positive for doping, I understand why a tournament wants a big star in the tournament, but it’s my personal belief, and it’s not a knock on anyone, that I don’t think people should be awarded wildcards afterwards.

‘If you want to come back, and it’s been a mistake, I understand, you should work your way up from the bottom. Simona’s situation has obviously dragged on for a long time. She got her suspension reduced. It wasn’t a clearance, it was a reduced sentence.

‘I just hope for a clean sport. That’s all I want. I want to have good role models for the young generation.

‘It’s a sport that has a lot of money in it, a lot of competitiveness, a lot of competitors. I want a fair fight.’

In response, Halep said: ‘Why did she say that? I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t cheat. I didn’t dope.

‘Thank you to the tournament for giving me the wildcard and have the possibility to play in such a big tournament. It was great to be back.

‘Only one person being negative about me is not that important because I have hundreds of people that are giving me love, so I will take that.’

‘My parents always taught me that good always prevails. I trust it 100 per cent from the first day until the last day that the truth will come out and the decision will be taken in a fair way. I knew I’m clean. I knew I didn’t do anything wrong.’
